A Hindu city that will leave a mark in your mind. Jaffna is colorful, warm and unique because it’s different than the rest of Sri Lanka. It is the biggest city in the North of the country and it has been scarred by a long recent war. Hence, Jaffna is rich in culture & art. The Tamil people of the city will welcome you warmly. Take the time (at least 1-2 days) to explore some of the many small markets that are widespread in the streets of this wonderful Sri Lankan city. Other than the town itself, the area around it is beautiful to discover on a rented mountain bike. For history fans, the Jaffna dutch fort is a marvelous piece of colonial architecture, that, however, was bombed quite heavy in WOII, still is amazing to visit in Jaffna.
Jaffna is surreal travel destination compared to the tropical environments on the rest of the island. The water lands that surround the city are stunning to behold.
Best way to get to Jaffna is to take a night bus from Negombo or take a train from Anudharapura up North.
