This little mountain town Sri Lanka was once a popular fresh-mountain-air escape for the English pioneers of Sri Lanka’s tea industry. It explains why many English cottage style houses can still be found in the old city center. The name ‘Nuwara Eliya’ might be quite difficult to pronounce, although other names like ‘little England’ are also quite fit for the village. Surrounded by a stunning countryside of tea plantations and fairytale hills, Nuwara Eliya can be found in a very scenic environment. Treat yourself to a night or two in one of Nuwara Eliya’s old colonial hotels. During day-time, an adventurous hike in the area can be an excellent thing to do to explore the beauty of Nuwara Eliya.
Nuwara Eliya can be reached by taking a bus from Hatton, Kandy or Ella. You can also reach the village by taking a bus from Colombo, but it will take you up to 6 hours to get there.
